We loved with a love that was more than love
Edgar Allen Poe
Poe was almost certainly writing about romantic love. With this one line, he did an extraordinary job of capturing the deep, rewarding and vital emotions we share with others.
Profound companionable love can be experienced in many forms throughout our lives. We can love our family, our friends, our God, and many others. Grief is not limited to the loss of a fellow human being. People grieve the loss of most friendships, including the loss of our animal friends.
Grieving the loss of any friendship is normal. Be assured you will get through this. You may experience real sadness, you may want to accept help from others, you may need to write a eulogy for your companion or possibly you may want to actively do something positive to honor their memory.
It is important to remember that time alone will not heal the pain of your grief. Time – in combination with positive action – can help you work through your grief journey.
